1. About This Statement
This Legal Services Statement explains, in one place, what Matrix Law Solicitors does, how we go about our work, who is likely to carry it out, roughly how long things typically take, and what to do if you are unhappy with our service. For Immigration, Wills/Probate/Estate Administration, and Employment Tribunal work, it sets out the service and process information the Solicitors Regulation Authority requires firms to publish alongside pricing (our fees for these areas are set out in our separate Price List). It also gives a general overview of our wider Private Client, Commercial Law and Litigation services.
This Statement is general information about our services and how we typically work. It does not form part of any contract and does not replace the client care letter and Terms of Business issued for your specific matter, which will always take priority.
2. About Matrix Law Solicitors
Matrix Law Solicitors is a recognised sole practice, authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under SRA number 8014467. We are not currently VAT-registered. Our office is at 1st Floor Regus, 239 Kensington High Street, London, W8 6SN. Telephone: 020 3369 7969. Email: contact@matrixlawsolicitors.co.uk.
Ravi Merhas is our Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration (COFA), and has overall supervisory responsibility for the work of the firm (ravi@matrixlawsolicitors.co.uk, 020 3369 7969).
3. Our Practice Areas at a Glance
- Private Client — Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Trusts, and Probate & Estate Administration.
- Immigration — personal and business immigration, from visa applications to appeals and judicial review.
- Commercial Law — advice for businesses on contracts, structuring, and day-to-day commercial matters.
- Litigation & Dispute Resolution — including Employment Tribunal claims and general civil disputes.
Sections 4 to 6 below set out our process, likely timescales, and staffing for Immigration, Probate & Estate Administration, and Employment Tribunal work specifically, since these are the areas covered by our published Price List. Section 7 gives a general overview of our other services.
4. Immigration Services
What's included and how we work
Our immigration work typically follows these stages, though the exact steps depend on the type of application or matter:
1. Initial advice — we discuss your circumstances, confirm which Immigration Rules category applies to you, and advise on your eligibility and prospects.
2. Evidence gathering — we help you identify and obtain the supporting documents and evidence your application needs, and prepare any supporting statements required.
3. Preparation and submission — we prepare your application, covering letter and supporting bundle, and submit it (with any application fee) to the Home Office or other relevant authority.
4. Outcome and next steps — we liaise with the Home Office while your application is under consideration and advise you on the decision and any further steps once it is made.
For appeals and judicial review, the stages are broadly: assessing the grounds of challenge, lodging the appeal or claim, preparing evidence and witness statements, instructing counsel where appropriate, and representation at the hearing.
Likely timescales
We aim to prepare and submit most straightforward applications within 4–8 weeks of receiving your full instructions and supporting documents; more complex matters, or those needing extensive evidence-gathering, can take longer. We have no control over Home Office, court or tribunal processing times once an application or appeal is lodged — these vary considerably by application type and case load, and can range from a few weeks to over a year. We will tell you about any published Home Office service standards relevant to your application and keep you updated as your matter progresses.
Who will carry out your work
Immigration matters are supervised by Ravi Merhas. Depending on the nature and complexity of your matter, day-to-day work may be carried out by a solicitor, a junior solicitor, or a paralegal working under his supervision; your client care letter will confirm who has conduct of your matter and their experience. Where representation before the Tribunal or a higher court would benefit from an advocate, we may instruct a barrister — we will discuss this, and any associated cost, with you in advance.
5. Wills, Probate & Estate Administration Services
What's included and how we work
Our probate and estate administration work typically follows these stages:
1. Initial instructions — we take detailed instructions, identify the executors or administrators and beneficiaries, and gather information about the estate's assets and liabilities.
2. Valuation and Inheritance Tax — we value the estate, establish whether Inheritance Tax is payable, and prepare and submit the relevant account to HMRC.
3. Grant of Representation — we prepare and submit the application for the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.
4. Collecting in the estate — once the Grant issues, we register it with banks, investment providers and other asset holders, and arrange for funds and assets to be collected in or transferred.
5. Settling liabilities and distribution — we discharge the estate's debts and liabilities, place statutory notices for unknown creditors where appropriate, and distribute the estate to beneficiaries.
6. Finalising tax affairs — we finalise the deceased's and the estate's tax position and obtain clearance from HMRC where needed.
Likely timescales
For a straightforward estate with no Inheritance Tax complications, we would generally expect to obtain the Grant of Representation within around 12–16 weeks of submitting the application, subject to current HM Courts & Tribunals Service Probate Registry processing times, which are outside our control. The remaining administration typically takes a further 3–9 months, depending on the number and nature of the estate's assets. More complex estates — for example those involving Inheritance Tax, property sales, disputed claims, or assets abroad — take longer, and we will give you a more specific estimate once we understand the estate.
Who will carry out your work
Private client matters are supervised by Ravi Merhas. Work will be carried out by a solicitor or a paralegal, according to the complexity of the estate, under his supervision; your client care letter will confirm who has conduct of your matter.
6. Employment Tribunal Services
What's included and how we work
Our Employment Tribunal work typically follows these stages:
1. Initial advice — we review your circumstances and the papers, and advise on the merits, risks, likely value and possible outcomes of a claim.
2. Early conciliation — where required, we support you through ACAS Early Conciliation before any claim is lodged.
3. Issuing or responding to a claim — we prepare and lodge your ET1 claim form, or prepare your ET3 response, within the applicable time limits.
4. Case management — we deal with case management orders, disclosure of documents, and preparation of witness statements.
5. Hearing preparation — we prepare the hearing bundle and prepare you and any witnesses to give evidence.
6. Hearing — we represent you, or instruct counsel to represent you, at any preliminary or final hearing.
Likely timescales
ACAS Early Conciliation typically lasts up to 6 weeks. Once a claim is lodged, Employment Tribunal cases commonly take somewhere between 9 and 18 months to reach a final hearing, though this varies considerably depending on the Tribunal's regional caseload and the complexity of the claim. Listing and hearing dates are set by the Tribunal, not by us, and are outside our control.
Who will carry out your work
Employment Tribunal matters are supervised by Ravi Merhas. For hearings, particularly final hearings or where the matter is legally or factually complex, we may instruct counsel to represent you — we will discuss this, and any associated cost, with you in advance.
7. Our Wider Services
Beyond the areas above, we also advise on:
Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Trusts: we help you plan for the future — preparing Wills, setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney, and advising on trusts and wider estate planning.
Commercial Law: we advise businesses on day-to-day commercial matters, including terms of business, commercial contracts, and general company/commercial questions.
Litigation & Dispute Resolution: alongside Employment Tribunal work (Section 6), we advise on general civil disputes, including contract disputes and debt recovery, and on the options available to resolve them — including negotiation, mediation and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution — before matters reach court.
These services are not currently covered by SRA-mandated price transparency rules, so we do not publish standard prices for them; we provide a bespoke estimate once we understand what you need.
8. Fees
Our published Price List sets out our indicative fees for Immigration, Probate & Estate Administration, Employment, and Family matters, together with our standard hourly rates: Senior Solicitor £350, Solicitor £300, Junior Solicitor £250, and Paralegal £125. Matrix Law Solicitors is not currently VAT-registered, so no VAT is added on top of these fees; if this changes, we will notify clients and update our published prices accordingly.
In addition to our fees, you will usually need to pay disbursements — third-party costs incurred on your behalf, such as Home Office application fees, court or tribunal fees, Probate Registry fees, counsel's fees, and expert or interpreter costs where relevant. Your client care letter will confirm the specific fee basis and any disbursements expected for your matter.
9. Complaints
If you are unhappy with any aspect of our service or our charges, please raise this in the first instance with the fee earner handling your matter, or with our Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP), Ravi Merhas (ravi@matrixlawsolicitors.co.uk, 020 3369 7969). We will acknowledge your complaint promptly and aim to provide a full response within 8 weeks.
If you remain unhappy once we have concluded our own complaints process, or if 8 weeks have passed, you may be entitled to refer your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman, PO Box 6167, Slough SL1 0EH (0300 555 0333, enquiries@legalombudsman.org.uk, www.legalombudsman.org.uk), normally within 6 months of our final response. You may also raise concerns about our professional conduct (as opposed to service) with the Solicitors Regulation Authority at www.sra.org.uk.
10. Regulatory Information
We maintain professional indemnity insurance in accordance with the SRA's requirements. Our current insurer is Travelers Insurance, and our policy provides cover of not less than £2,000,000. Details of our insurer and the territorial and monetary limit of our cover are available on request.
After your matter concludes, we retain your file (in paper and/or electronic form) for 7 years from the date the matter ends, after which it may be securely destroyed without further notice to you.
We will only use your personal data to carry out your instructions, to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, and for other purposes described in our Privacy Notice, a copy of which is available on request or at www.matrixlawsolicitors.co.uk. You have rights under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 to access, correct, or ask us to delete your data in certain circumstances.
